Working with a handicapped individual can be so rewarding! There are many types of mental handicaps and they all leave the person able to function in varying degrees, depending on how debilitating the mental disease that they have.

It is so important to first treat that person how you would want to be treated. Just because they are mentally handicapped does not mean that you should talk loudly to them. Talking louder than necessary will not make them understand you. Secondly, make sure that you know their limitations and work with them based on their mental age. This may mean changing activities to their level so that they can understand.

Thirdly, always look the person in the eye. This will let them know that you are focused on them and care about them. The fourth important tip is to have patience with them. They may be slower at doing things than you and they may need extra guidance and help. Lastly, keep a smile on your face! This goes a long way to make them feel comfortable and at ease.
